So, I've been hearing a lot about Undertale recently, and I'm going to be honest here:

What's up with the hype?

I mean, from what I've heard with all the non-spoilery shit semi-shovelled towards my mouth about it, is that it's "the hypest shit" and an art-game which is incredibly meta in how it plays out. Which is... nice, I guess. But the tutorial is fairly bland and uninteresting, and I don't enjoy games where the argument is "you have to get # of hours into it to properly enjoy it as then it gets good". You know, because it should sell itself to me in the opening moments, not afterwards. Case in point: Final Fantasy 13. All I've heard about it is that it gets good about 4-10 hours in. Wow... so I have to play for a fucking long time to get any enjoyment out of the game, when I could instead be playing a game I enjoy and actually having fun in my free time, which is limited.

I do have it (Undertale), but I stopped playing after a small amount of time since I have next to no interest in playing something without a legitimate hook. The gameplay isn't anything to shout about, and the opening has shown me a fairly good narrative, but not one I'm willing to devote time into exploring when I have other things to do, such as play Mad Max or replay Fire Emblem 9 again. Or, as I actually did, complete Overlord 1 finally.

So yeah, if someone can give me a basic analysis of the plot (it can't be that hard - LOTR summed up is proto-fantasy detailing the adventures of the heroes of the forces of good against an ancient and powerful evil) that'd be perfect. I need... something to sink my teeth into. Shovel Knight was a restylised late 80s/ early 90s platformer; Papers, Please was a glimpse into dystopia and had a surprisingly deep narrative with an actual reason to take care of your family; FTL is a good example of a rogue spaceship escaping an Evil Empire. I need something to get me interesting or motivated into playing Undertale for it to not be left to a "might have been" pile of games.

Honestly just play through the beginning area (The Ruins), and maybe five minutes in the next area. If that doesn't get you interested, then feel free to call it quits. It gets much better (and more interesting) than that, but that's the gist of the kind of story/feels and humor.
